Gordon Ackerman
Gordon Ackerman’s art has grown out of the same fascination with the world that led him to science. His physics background enabled him to express his delight in the world not with the usual brush or camera, but in equations. He was able to build programs to make the images according to his actual perception rather then just a specific image. This way of working, called “Generative Art”, lets the program produce any number of different images from the same concept.
It was a process of serendipity that led him to use equations that approximately modeled the way the human arm work to make the line. But he was taken to computer models of the way the brain works, neural networks, to control that arm and set is colours and nature at different points to refine his work.
On www.archyart.org.uk you will find more commentary on this program’s work but also many other works that have led on from there. Gordon often laughs that he was taught to paint by a computer, but the process of looking at the world around to define what he wanted his program to do, and examining its output to select what it should work further on has deepened his understanding and confidence in what he is aiming at.
Now he has applied his fascination with complex textured images to painting, ceramics, photography and constructions. Some of this work is in this shop, but others can be found on his website and much can be added to this site for you to buy if you request on his site.
